VELscope ® Vx System
The World’s #1 Adjunctive Examination Device
Natural tissue fluorescence is caused by “fluorophores” that, when excited by light of an appropriate wavelength (e.g. blue), will emit their own light at a longer wavelength (e.g. green). The resulting fluorescence may reveal information about cellular, structural, and/or metabolic activity changes that are often directly related to disease processes occurring inside the tissue. The VELscope Vx system is a powerful device for the enhanced visualization of mucosal abnormalities such as oral cancer and premalignant dysplasia. Unlike other adjunctive devices used by dentists, the VELscope Vx system does not require any dyes or prolonged testing procedures. In fact, VELscope Vx examinations can be performed in the dentist’s office during routine hygiene exams (and under normal lighting conditions) in about two minutes.
Oral Cancer Foundation, 2021
The actual number of oral cancer cases continues to increase….49% increase in the last 10 years!
VELscope® Vx Advantages
- Provides powerful visualization of oral mucosal abnormalities, including oral cancer, that can be overlooked
- No need for unpleasant dyes or rinses
- Used by thousands of practices in 23 countries
- iPod touch integration for photo documentation and case collaboration
The Technology
Tissue fluorescence technology utilizes specific wavelengths of blue light combined with proprietary optical filtering to enhance the visualization of oral mucosal abnormalities. During a VELscope fluorescence screening, unhealthy tissue will typically have an abnormal appearance which stands out against surrounding healthy tissue, decreasing the likelihood that areas of concern will be missed.
The VELscope® Vx, the latest model release of VELscope technology, uses natural tissue fluorescence to improve the way practitioners examine the oral mucosa and screen for tissue abnormalities by enhancing the visualization of pre-cancers, cancer, and other disease processes.
ORAL CANCER – The True Cause
HPV-16 and 18
The FDA estimates that 93% of cervical cancers are associated with HPV-16 or 18. In the oral environment these HPV’s manifest themselves primarily in the oropharynx regions – such as the back of the throat, base of the tongue, tonsils, tonsillar pillars and soft palate.
The Market Leader
The VELscope Vx is in a class by itself when compared to competitive
adjunctive screening technologies:
- No need for unpleasant dyes or rinses so your patients are completely comfortable
- 16 LED’s ensure that the fluorescence excited by the VELscope is bright, easily visible and simple to photograph
- Low per-exam cost saves money for your patients and your practice
- Used by over 15,000 practitioners in 23 countries
